這是新近去世的英國黑人詩人澤弗奈亞（Benjamin Zephaniah）與去年7月去世的著名愛爾蘭光頭女歌手奧康納（Sinéad O'Connor）合作的一首歌。歌詞利用了Empire（帝國）與Vampire（吸血鬼）發(fā)音之近似作為鞭撻手段。可惜網(wǎng)上歌詞版本之間略有差異，不知孰是，其中也有待解決的疑問（主要是“我看著你的情人”一句）。查不到具體的詞曲作者，猜想亦為兩人合作。澤弗奈亞因憎惡帝國而拒領(lǐng)統(tǒng)治者頒給的英帝國勛章，奧康納則憎恨英帝國對愛爾蘭的壓迫，這種合作也就水到渠成了。譯介這首歌，權(quán)且作為對兩位戰(zhàn)士的紀(jì)念。
奧康納是一個能夠把普普通通的歌曲唱成經(jīng)典的音樂奇才。但她把自己視為認(rèn)真嚴(yán)肅的藝術(shù)家，拒絕資本主義的商業(yè)包裝，干脆剪成光頭。從小受虐的經(jīng)歷使她對天主教會層出不窮的對兒童性虐待事件怒不可遏，1992年在電視節(jié)目中當(dāng)眾撕毀教皇約翰·保羅二世的照片，并且抨擊音樂獎典禮充斥商業(yè)主義。她在美國的音樂會拒絕美國的國旗國歌登場。在“成熟發(fā)達(dá)”，愛國主義洗腦泛濫且根深蒂固，保守教徒多于過江之鯽的美國，她的行為無異于觸犯天條，招至巨量的狂怒抵制。她都作為一個孤獨(dú)的戰(zhàn)士去面對與承受，幸而也有不少進(jìn)步的藝術(shù)家同她合作，給她安慰。澤弗奈亞或許也算其中一個。
